The most difficult decision I've ever had to make was whether to pursue postgraduate studies abroad or to accept a well-paid job offer in my hometown.
There were numerous factors I had to weigh up carefully. On one hand, the job offered financial security and immediate professional development. On the other, studying overseas would have exposed me to a broader range of perspectives and opened doors to an international career. I was also acutely aware of the financial burden that further education would place on my family.
After considerable deliberation, I ultimately decided to defer the job offer and pursue my studies. What tipped the balance was a conversation with a mentor, who pointed out that financial opportunities would continue to arise, whereas the chance to study at that particular institution might not present itself again.
In retrospect, I believe it was the right decision. Notwithstanding the initial financial hardship, the experience broadened my worldview immeasurably and equipped me with skills that have proven invaluable in my subsequent career. That said, I recognise it was a decision that not everyone would be in a position to make.
